What are dermal fillers?

You have probably heard of people having lip fillers, tear trough fillers, nose fillers or cheek fillers, but what actually are they?

Dermal fillers are a minimally invasive alternative to surgical procedures such as surgical rhinoplasty. They are a soft injectable gel that is made of hyaluronic acid. They work by restoring volume into areas of the face that are sunken or sagging due to age. They also help to smooth facial contours and reduce lines and wrinkles such as mouth lines or marionette lines.

What types of fillers are there?

There are many types of dermal fillers on the market. But the most common are hyaluronic acid fillers. This is because they provide the most natural results to enhance facial features.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the skin that helps to give it structure and keep it looking plump and healthy. As we age, we start to lose levels of hyaluronic acid, which is why our skin starts to look thin and more fragile.

By injecting hyaluronic acid filler, we can help to replace some of the lost hyaluronic acid in your skin. Not only will this restore volume in sunken areas of the face, but it will also boost its hydration, giving you a healthy and more youthful look to your skin.

At Derma Aesthetics London, we use high-quality hyaluronic acid fillers to help you achieve the look you want.

What areas can you have dermal filler treatment in?

Our skilled aesthetic doctor can perform dermal filler treatments in the following areas:

·       Dermal lip fillers

·       Tear trough fillers (under eye fillers) for dark circles

·       Cheek fillers

·       Chin fillers

·       Jawline fillers

Are dermal fillers the same as anti-wrinkle injections?

The short answer to this is no. Each treatment targets different things and produces different results.

Dermal fillers help to plump and restore volume in the face. These include lip fillers, nose fillers and cheek fillers. They also work to smooth out static facial lines and wrinkles that remain on the face even after we stop using our facial muscles.

Anti-wrinkle injections, on the other hand, target fine lines and wrinkles on the face. These are also known as dynamic wrinkles that form when we smile, laugh or frown. They work by relaxing the facial muscles for a short period of time, which reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

The most common areas to have anti-wrinkle treatment include frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet. Anti-wrinkle injections can also help to reduce excessive underarm sweating.

Some patients may only need one of the treatments. However other patients may combine dermal fillers treatment with anti-wrinkle injections to achieve a more youthful appearance. Your doctor will assess your skin concerns and decide on the best course of treatment for you.

What happens during dermal filler treatments?

The initial consultation

Before having dermal filler treatment, you will need to meet with Dr Raja who will assess your skin issues and look at your medical history. He will also talk you through dermal filler procedures and what results you can expect from treatment.

The consultation is also your chance to ask any questions you might have. We want you to feel comfortable and confident in any decision you make about treatment, so we always encourage you to ask us anything that is on your mind.

Dr Raja will tailor your dermal fillers treatment to your skin goals. This means that every treatment is different and unique to the patient’s needs.

The dermal filler procedure

During your dermal filler appointment, Dr Raja will talk through the treatment process with you

once again. He will discuss how derma filler he will use to achieve the results

you want and what type of side effects you might expect.

Depending on what parts of the face you are having dermal fillers in, your treatment should take around 30-60 minutes to complete.

We often get the question – do dermal fillers hurt? For most patients, it is a fairly comfortable treatment. You will feel the scratch of the needle and a slight pressure from the needle. To make your treatment more comfortable, we can apply a topical numbing cream to the skin first.

We inject the dermal fillers using a cannula or a very tiny needle. This helps to ensure that the dermal filler is placed precisely in the right areas of the face. It also helps to reduce the risk of bruising and swelling.

Dermal filler treatment results

You will start to see the results of your dermal fillers right away. You may have some slight

swelling or bruising around the injection points, but this will go down within the first 24-48 hours. Your doctor will provide you with aftercare advice to help you take care of your skin and get the most out of your results.

Whilst you will see some results straight away. It can take 1-2 weeks for the dermal filler to fully settle and your final results to show.

Depending on the area you have treatment on, your dermal fillers can last anywhere from 6-18 months. This will also depend on how you respond to the treatment and how quickly your body breaks down the fillers.

At around the six-month mark, you may decide to come back to the clinic to have a top-up treatment. This is especially true of patients who have lip fillers. This will help to maintain your results and keep you looking younger.

Are dermal fillers safe?

When dermal fillers are done by a trained medical professional, they are a safe and effective treatment. You should always consult with an aesthetic doctor or nurse practitioner before having any type of dermal filler treatment.

At Derma Aesthetics London, you will have treatment with Dr Raja, who is an expert in aesthetic treatments. He understands facial anatomy and at which points you can safely inject dermal fillers to get a natural-looking result.
